Adrian Tucker intends to draw on his retail experience to drive change in technology delivery for the Student Loan Company (SLC), where he was appointed Chief Information Officer in late 2017. His overriding goal is to deliver value for money for the taxpayer, while disrupting and transforming the technology landscape. Earlier in the year, he completed an ambitious complete technology stack change in the Department for Education, where he was CTO. This saw the rollout of 6,500 Surface devices, running Windows 10 and Office 365. The value to the organisation was significant, allowing true mobile working and exploiting all space within DfE buildings. Another significant DfE milestone was his closure of a third-party data centre, unpicking the move of 70 applications to the cloud. The adoption of the Velostrata platform allowed Tucker to map and virtualise many of the applications, ensuring a smooth migration to public cloud. The change will save millions and maximise the efficiency of the cloud platform. Leveraging that DfE experience, he has embarked on a similar programme at SLC. A number of innovations have been delivered throughout the year, including smartphone technology using APis to access business systems and the rollout of Skype peer-to-peer video for collaboration across multiple sites. At SLC, he is investigating the use of bots to answer internal and external frequently asked questions so that only complex enquiries or those requiring second-line fixing need be passed on. Data-based decision-making remains high on his SLC agenda, and he has been trialling AI algorithms. The introduction of a range of apps is planned to allow students to service their student loan accounts digitally. He sees disruption as key in the coming year, and is looking to take out significant manual processing from the organisation.
