The Department of Energy and Climate Change was created by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2008. The department was created to take over some of the responsibilities of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reforms and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The department aims to help businesses save energy and resources and secure energy for the future. One of the department’s central aims is to reduce climate change and has set out a long term plan to reduce the effects global warming in the future. The Department for Energy and Climate Change also aims to provide extra support for vulnerable customers or those who are considered to be living in ‘fuel poverty’. Fuel poverty is defined as a household which spends more than 10% of its income to maintain a healthy heating regime. The department has 1,313 employees and a budget of around the £3 billion.
