Salesforce has signed a definitive agreement to acquire San Francisco-based startup Waii for an undisclosed sum to enhance SQL analytics within Agentforce, its suite of tools aimed at helping enterprises build autonomous AI agents for sales, service, marketing, and commerce use cases.

Waii’s core technology, which Salesforce is planning to integrate into Data Cloud, translates natural language questions or inputs into complex SQL queries.

Data Cloud is the foundation for most of Salesforce’s offerings, including Agentforce, and helps enterprises combine data from multiple sources and provide actionable intelligence across business functions. Salesforce explained that, once the integration is complete, ’s core technology will create a dynamic metadata knowledge graph of all data within it which will act as a unified semantic layer for agents and agentic workflows. .

In Agentforce, this integration means that AI agents will be able to answer complex business questions in real time, using live Data Cloud data, and trigger follow-up actions inside Salesforce workflows, said , principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.

In addition, Everest Group practice director pointed out that the integration solves issues around data fragmentation, especially in large enterprises, and the dependence of non-technical users on technical teams to write their SQL queries.

Addresses enterprise pain point

Waii’s metadata knowledge graph, which maps intricate relationships between tables, columns, business metrics, and governance rules, is also dynamic in nature, Salesforce said. The metadata knowledge graph automatically updates itself as new tables, fields, metrics, or governance rules are added or modified.

“Since the graph adjusts in real time, responses to SQL queries can remain accurate,” Kramer said, adding that this solves a real pain point for enterprises.

Waii’s stack also comes with a dialect-aware SQL compiler and a built-in query optimizer, according to Salesforce.

While the query optimizer is expected to boost query performance, the dialect-aware SQL compiler could be an important feature for enterprises, as SQL syntax varies by database platform, Kramer said.

“Snowflake, BigQuery, PostgreSQL, and others have their own rules and functions. This compiler ensures the generated SQL is correct and optimized for the target database, improving performance and reducing errors,” Kramer said.

Waii currently supports Postgres, Trino, MySQL, Databricks, Snowflake, SQL Server, BigQuery, Athena, Presto, Redshift, Oracle, MongoDB, SQLite and OSQuery, a FAQ section on its website indicated. It also claims to support some vector databases, but doesn’t list any names.

However, Salesforce isn’t the only CRM provider that is taking steps to enhance natural language-driven SQL analytics. Other providers are also making focused investments in this direction: Microsoft Dynamics 365 with Fabric Copilot, Oracle CX with Select AI, SAP Customer Experience with Joule, HubSpot’s ChatSpot, and Zoho CRM’s Zia AI.

Salesforce has also said that it has plans to integrate Waii’s stack into Tableau, its visual analytics platform for business intelligence, and use it as the foundation of a semantic engine which is expected to make use of Waii’s real-time knowledge graph, along with its data visualization capabilities.

Additionally, Kramer pointed out, the acquisition could be a strategy by Salesforce to prevent its rivals from using Waii’s technology.

The acquisition is expected to close towards the end of this year. Salesforce has not clarified whether Waii will retain its existing customers post-acquisition.
